Summer Camp was a Blast!
A GREAT BIG Thanks to all of the organizers of the Summer Camp this year, especially Mr. Mike Cox and Ms. Kathy Holmes. Both worked extra-overtime to make sure EVERYONE had the opportunity to earn the merit badges (both inside and outside the troop - thanks 746 counselors!) and patches for their participation in a wide variety of activities.
- Twenty-nine Scouts completed 122 Merit Badges and earned 27 partials.
- Eight Scouts and one adult leader participated in the New River Adventure program, a challenging COPE program for older boys.
- 2 first year campers participated in the Brownsea program. This first year camper program helps Scouts advance to through the ranks to First Class.
- Two scouts learned to Kayak and five earned their BSA Snorkeling Patch.
- At least two earned their Finger Carving Merit Badge.
The highest number of Merit Badges earned was six and several boys did this: Scott, Derrick, Dustin, Brendan, Ricky, and Kyle.
Special Thanks to Quartermaster Mike King for supplying pulling the now-famous Troop 746 Trailer both to and from Summer Camp.
Now You Know Where We Spend The Money, PLEASE Read On About How We Earn It!
Citrus Sale / Fundraising Issues:
We need your Help! After 2 years of declining sales due to weather problems, we are hoping that our Annual Citrus Sale this year will be an overwhelming success. We need EVERY SCOUT to make their calls on a timely basis.not at the last minute! The dates we have for delivery and pickup are as follows: November 18 and 19, December 16 and 17, January 27 and 28, and March 4 and 5. Reminder: We will be using the Gym this year. This means we will need additional help in setup and cleanup because the floor will need to be covered / uncovered. Please reserve some additional time around these dates to help.
From the Desk of Norbert Luken: Approximately 108 people who we had on our Citrus call list failed to buy any fruit last year. This number is much higher than normal and, therefore, we need to call these people and ask if they would still like to purchase fruit. We will be creating call lists and sending them out to Scout families. If you receive a list, please call the folks and ask if they would like to be called this year. If they have moved or if the number is wrong, please note it and attempt to make the correction. Thanks for your help. |
Additional Fundraising Ideas: The Troop Committee, recognizing the fact that 1 successful citrus sale will not solve our financial issues, have begun to look at other sources of revenue for the troop. We have looked at long term solutions such as setting up a Foundation and becoming a part of the United Way, as well as short term solutions like group yard sales, car washes and bake sales.
New Fundraising Committee Formed:
Kim Stansbury and Karen Gouldmann have graciously volunteered to become co-chairs of this new committee. They need YOUR help! Please set aside some time on Friday night August 26 at 7:30 - while your kids are at the scout meeting. We would like to get YOUR ideas about how we can raise additional funds to support Troop 746. Please take a few minutes and join us!
From the Desk of Kathy Holmes: Due to a severe lack of funds, high adventure trips to Philmont and Seabase have been postponed from 2006 to 2007. The out West trip has also been postponed. At the Committee meetings members been challenged with making many programming decisions based on funding. To cite an example, in 2005 both the Pocono Ski Trip and the White Water Challengers trips were cancelled. Decisions have to be made about future programming in the face of these budgetary problems. Are we going to cancel the trips, are we going to schedule them and request that participants foot the bill, or are we going to seek out alternative methods of fund raising? If the third option is chosen, volunteers are needed. Those that are currently involved are too taxed to take on this additional responsibility. We need your help to be able to continue to offer the great programming that has brought many of us to 746. Read on.
High Adventure Trips: 2007: (from the Website)
Troop 746 is in the early planning stages of two high adventure trips for the summer of 2007. One trip will be to Philmont , New Mexico and is a backpacking trek through 50 - 80 miles of rugged New Mexico wilderness. The other trip is to the Bahamas for Sea Base where the scouts become the crew of a large schooner sailing through the Bahama Cays. Sea Base is a one week trip and could include an extra day or two for traveling time. Approximately two weeks should be planned for Philmont. Costs are going to be determined by how well the troop does this year and next year in our Citrus sales and other possible fundraisers. $300 scholarships are available to those who qualify. For additional information concerning the costs of the trip or who might be eligible, see Mr. Mark Anderson.
BSA Youth Protection Training and Baltimore Archdiocese STAND Training:
According to our STAND / Youth Protection Coordinator, Pat Myers, 90% of the active adults in our troop have completed this training. Please remember that going forward ALL adult volunteers must have completed both STAND and Youth Protection training to be eligible to attend camping and all other outdoor activities. New parents are given a 6 month grace period to get the required training. Please contact Pat if you have any questions about your status. STAND information is available on the Archdiocese Web Site www.archbalt.org - click on Child and Youth Protection. For Youth Protection Information access www.dulaneybsa.org and click on Training.
$600 Pots and Pans Anonymous Contribution: The Troop has received a $600 contribution $100 per patrol) that is earmarked for replacing some of our older cooking supplies. Troop Quartermaster Mike King is determining what we need to replace and will be buying new equipment shortly.
Speaking of Contributions:
Kathy Holmes and Mike King worked together to procure 4 new Weber Kettle Grills from the Home Depot on Pulaski Highway at a significant discount. The grills were 'christened' at Camp Cone . Thanks!
Possible Upcoming Events: Stay Tuned!
Navy Football Game at the Academy - Fall 2005
Help is Always Needed - Adult help is needed for merit badge counseling, to plan monthly camping trips and plan the next long range trip, Seabase, and Philmont trips. Come to the Committee Meeting on Weds September 14, 2005 at 7:30 in the Basement of the Parish Center to lend a hand.
Remember to stop by Friday Night August 26 for Fundraing discussions!
