Disappointing Orange Profits Lead to Tough Decisions About Future Long-Range Trips:

As we all know the Fruit Sale this year did not produce the income that it normally does due to the weather. The committee has, over the past several months, discussed changes that will have to be made to the long-term camping schedule.

Previously, the Troop wanted to do Sea Base and Philmont trips in 2006. Financially, this will not be possible, so we voted to move the entire schedule forward 1 year. We will be doing Sea Base and Philmont trips in 2007 and the Out West trip in 2008. The Troop will continue to camp monthly.

Sea Base Cost is around $1100 per scout.
Philmont is now more than $1200 per scout.
It remains a possibility that parents will be paying more of the cost for each child. Additional Fundraising Ideas are needed. Any ideas must conform to official BSA Fundraising rules found on the BSA Web site.

We need to look at every opportunity on every level: from matching contributions at the workplace to grants from foundations to Flea Markets and Car Washes. Without additional funding many of the trips we have taken for granted in the past will not be a part of our future. If you have ideas, please bring them to the monthly committee meetings and share them with us.

Mike Eagle Scout Court of Honor: June 10 th at 7:00 PM in the Church. Please arrive by 6:30 in FULL CLASS A UNIFORM to assist in setup and organization. Color Guard should be aware of the flag locations rehearse as needed. At the start of the program all scouts should parade in followed by the troop adults.

BSA Youth Protection Training and Baltimore Archdiocese STAND Training

They have been warning us for years and now it's finally here:

IF YOU HAVE NOT ATTENDED STAND AND YOUTH PROTECTION TRAINING SESSIONS AND COMPLETED ALL REQUIRED PAPERWORK YOU WILL NOT BE PERMITTED TO ATTEND CAMPING TRIPS.

We don't make the laws - we just enforce them. GET TRAINING!

Additional Ideas for Summer Fun and Adventure from Ms. Kathy Holmes:

The Baltimore County Sailing Center offers a special program for Scouts who want to earn the Small Boat Sailing Merit Badge. The program runs for one weekend with classroom instruction on Friday night, and a mix of classroom and sailing on Saturday and Sunday. This years program is scheduled for September 23, 24, 25. For more information visit their web-site

http://www.bcsailing.org/ , call Don Kohlhafer at 410-544-7466 or e-mail him at donaldkohl@aol.com . This is a great program that several of our Scouts have participated in and enjoyed.

2) Broad Creek is offering several provisional and specialty camps this summer. Find the information on the web at http://www.baltimorebsa.org/ . Navigate to camping/provisional camping. This is a great opportunity for Boys that couldn't make it to summer camp with the troop, those looking for a challenge (COPE, Scuba), Life Scouts (Trail to Eagle), and Scouts who just can't get enough Scout Camp.

Note: These are individual opportunities that one must explore and attend on his own or with a buddy and are not supported by the troop in any way.

Summer Camp is Coming!

Camp Powhaten
Saturday July 23rd thru Saturday July 30th

Adult Slots Open:

Regretfully, two adults had to cancel their Summer Camp trips. This leaves us with one extra registered (and paid for) adult. If you had some last minute changes yourself and would like to go, please contact us ASAP! We'd love to have you join us.

Merit Badge Classes/Other Activities:

Several boys have already signed up for their Merit Badge classes. The White Water Rafting trip will be all day on Monday and each boy must make arrangements with his Counselor to make-up any missed work. Older boys are encouraged to explore the high adventure options that include, the High Knoll Trail (an East Coast Philmont experience), Scuba Diving Certification, Life Guarding, and the New River Adventure (COPE program). Completed Merit Badge forms can be faxed to Kathy at 410-566-0700, or e-mailed to Scully0007@aol.com. These classes are on a first-come-first-served basis.

Troop Logo - The Committee agreed that we should have a Troop Logo to use on stationary, correspondence and the Cargo Trailer. Mike Cox and others came up with the design and colors that you see at the top left of this edition of the Hiker. One variation will be that it will be Red, White and Blue on the Trailer. Thanks Mike! See the website for pictures.
